Start with what matters most
There is no single best image format for every image. Consider transparency, fine detail, file size and the software or website that will receive the file.
JPG: a familiar choice for photos
JPG is widely supported and often produces manageable photo sizes. Its compression is lossy: lower quality usually reduces file size while introducing visible artifacts. It does not support transparency. Our JPG export places transparent areas onto a white background.
PNG: transparency and lossless encoding
PNG is useful for graphics, crisp text and transparent backgrounds. It encodes the rendered pixels without lossy compression. A PNG version of a photo can be much larger than a JPG. Re-exporting as PNG does not recover detail already lost in the source.
WebP: another option for web use
WebP can provide useful file-size savings and supports transparency. Our browser export uses the selected quality setting. Confirm that your destination accepts WebP before choosing it.
Compare the actual export
Use the image converter to change format, or the image compressor to try different JPG and WebP quality values. Check fine detail, text, gradients and the displayed output size before you download.
